A small house in Çukurcuma

We restored the attendant's house of an 1831 hamam, and kept seven rooms.

Çukurcuma is the quiet uphill behind Beyoğlu: chestnut trees, antique dealers, an unhurried café on every corner. Orhan Pamuk set The Museum of Innocence on the next street, and the museum itself is a three-minute walk from our courtyard.

The building was the hammamhane — the attendant's quarters — of Çukurcuma Hamamı, finished in 1831 and still operating as a working bath next door. We spent four years bringing the wood and Marmara marble back, room by room.

What we kept: the courtyard, the chestnut shutters, the smell of soap and stone in the morning. What we added: very good beds, very thick towels, in-room laundry, and a small library curated by an antique-dealer friend across the street.

Seven rooms · two suites

Each room takes its mood from a part of the bath.

From €180 a night, courtyard breakfast included, two-night minimum on weekends.

“Cross the courtyard, and the year is 1831.”

Our guests have a standing reservation at the historic bath next door — a working hamam, two marble domes, and an attendant who remembers your name by the second visit.

We have stayed in a lot of small hotels in Istanbul. This one is different. The family runs it themselves, you feel that the moment you walk in, and the apartment had more space than our flat at home.

Çukurcuma is the right neighbourhood to see a real Istanbul, not the postcard one. Hammamhane sits in the middle of it, and the hamam next door is a small miracle we are still talking about.

The kitchenette, the laundry, the underfloor heating — they think about long stays in a way most boutique hotels don't. We came for two nights and rebooked for two more.

Two nights in Çukurcuma is the right length of stay. So is two weeks.
